Before & After School Care (GO)

Graduate Oklahoma

Graduate Oklahoma (GO) Club was developed in 2005 as a research-based afterschool program recognizing the impact that movement and nutrition have on academic gains. GO Club provides solutions for reversing childhood obesity trends, curbing risky behaviors and anti-social behaviors, improving academic performance and keeping kids in school.

Students in both GO Club Before- and After school and Summer GO Club have the opportunity to participate in non-competitive specialized movement, nutrition education, literacy, STEM and arts education. During the school year, we work with nearly 400 students from TPS, Owasso Public Schools and Bixby Public Schools. We have seen dramatic results in GO Club, including improved math and reading test scores, improved attendance rates, and improved flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and core strength.

Summer GO

The YMCA of Greater Tulsa partners with Teach for America and Tulsa Public Schools to provide the afternoon component to morning summer school classes for 800 students at four elementary school sites.

Summer GO is based on and was created from the success we have had with our GO After School program, a research-based program focused on wellness, movement, and fun. Along with movement and nutrition activities, special themes and activities vary by site and year. Participants also get energetic, enthusiastic mentoring from the scores of counselors the YMCA hires for the program.

Results

In 2016, kids enrolled in the Y’s afternoon program had a 79% attendance rate and gained an average of one month's additional reading proficiency in just 4 weeks over kids not enrolled in the afternoon Y program. Summer GO not only has a lasting impact on students, but their families as well. Parents have wonderful things to say about Summer GO!

“My daughter didn’t know how to swim and now she does!"
“My daughter learned how to take care of problems in a rational manner!”
“Thank you ALL for being positive role models for our young people!”
“Kids are more active and spend less time on electronics.“
“YMCA staff are a blessingto every child!“
“My children are more aware of what they eat!”
