(GO) Club was developed in 2005 as a research-based afterschool program recognizing the impact that movement and nutrition have on academic gains. GO Club provides solutions for reversing childhood obesity trends, curbing risky behaviors and anti-social behaviors, improving academic performance and keeping kids in school.
Students in both GO Club Afterschool and Summer GO Club have the opportunity to participate in non-competitive specialized movement, nutrition education, literacy, STEM and arts education. During the school year, we work with nearly 400 students from TPS, Owasso Public Schools and Bixby Public Schools. We have seen dramatic results in GO Club, including improved math and reading test scores, improved attendance rates, and improved flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and core strength.
Schools that participate in our GO program in 2015-16 include: Bailey Elementary-Owasso, Stone Canyon Elementary-Owasso, Smith Elementary-Owasso, McClure Elementary-Tulsa, Eugene Field Elementary-Tulsa, Sequoyah Elementary School-Tulsa, Owasso Family YMCA, Daily Family YMCA, Eugene Field Elementary-Tulsa.
We could not do it without our Graduate Oklahoma partners: Tulsa Health Department, Bixby Public Schools, Owasso Public Schools, Tulsa Public Schools, Tulsa Surgical Hospital, and Growing Together.
The YMCA of Greater Tulsa partners with Teach for America and Tulsa Public Schools to provide the afternoon component to morning summer school classes for more than 800 students at four elementary school sites.
Summer GO is based on and created from the success we have had with our GO Afterschool program, a research based program based on wellness, movement and fun. Along with movement and nutrition activities, special themes and activities vary by site and year. Participants also get energetic, enthusiastic mentoring from the scores of young counselors the YMCA hires for the program.
Kids enrolled in the Y’s afternoon program had a 92% attendance rate and had a 10% higher gain in math and 63% higher gain in reading than those kids not enrolled in the afternoon Y program. Summer GO not only has a lasting impact on students but their families as well.
