Diabetes Empowerment Education Program

DIABATES EMPOWERMENT AND EDUCATION PROGRAM 

Managing a chronic condition like diabetes can be difficult. That’s why the YMCA of Greater Tulsa is partnering with Ability Resource, Inc to offer the Diabetes Empowerment and Education Program (DEEP) free of charge to our members.  

This six-week program is intended for adults over the age of 65 who have been diagnosed with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. The program will meet once a week for two hours to discuss topics and develop skills that are critical for successful diabetes self-management.  

Topics covered in the DEEP curriculum include: 

  • Understanding the Human Body 

  • Risk Factors 

  • Blood Glucose Monitoring 

  • Physical Activity 

  • Management Through Meal Planning 

  • Complications 

  • Medications and Medical Care 

  • Mobilizing Your Family and Friends 

PROGRAM GOALS 

The DEEP curriculum will help program participants achieve the following goals: 

  • Improving and maintaining the quality of life of persons with pre-diabetes and existing diabetes  

  • Preventing complications and incapacities  

  • Improving eating habits and maintaining adequate nutrition  

  • Increasing physical activity  

  • Developing self-care skills  

  • Improving the relationship between patients and health care providers  

  • Utilizing available resources
